That's why I've always insisted that if you're planning to visit Africa only once, Botswana should be your destination of choice. These words are rooted in the belief that Botswana offers one of the last genuine African experiences. Experiences that capture the essence of exploration that awaits every traveller who sets foot in this remarkable country.

1. Its people and cultures are rich in heritage and tradition. 

Botswana is a treasure trove of cultural richness and is home to over 20 distinct African tribes, each contributing to the country's diverse ethical landscape. Among these tribes, the San people stand out as one of the oldest surviving lineages in our anthropological history, their legacy spanning as far back as 20,000 years. 

As you travel through each of its 17 districts you are welcomed by the genuine warmth and hospitality of its people, epitomizing the spirit of camaraderie, inclusivity and a genuine love to share. From the rhythmic cadence of Tswana music to the intricate craftsmanship of Batswana beadwork, Botswana's cultural kaleidoscope is celebrated with unwavering pride.

2. The Okavango Delta

North of Maun lies the Okavango Delta, a breathtaking oasis in the arid Kalahari Desert. Spanning 15,000 square kilometres, this remarkable ecosystem is fed by the Cubango and Cuito Rivers, both originating in Angola before winding its way into the harsh desert landscape. Each year, this lifeline of water pulses into the delta, nourishing what is nothing less than a miracle. The Jewel of Southern Africa. 

You see, protected by the Moremi Game Reserve and numerous surrounding wildlife concessions, the Okavango Delta is a sanctuary for some of the world’s largest congregation of mammals and birds, offering unparalleled opportunities and sights that will leave even the most experienced safari traveller in awe. 

And this is why the Delta is the beating heart of Botswana’s safari industry,  within this wildlife haven lies hidden some of Africa's premier camps, each offering a unique blend of luxury….and adventure of course. Whether embarking on a guided game drive, gliding silently through the waterways in a traditional mokoro, or simply soaking in the sights and sounds of this pristine wilderness from your veranda, the delta is an empty page enticing us to write our own remarkable adventure story.

3. The Makgadigadi Pans

As the waters of the Okavango Delta continue their journey, they eventually reach the Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest salt pans in the world, spanning over 16,000 square kilometres. Once the centre of a vast ancient lake that evaporated more than 2,000 years ago, these awe-inspiring salt flats now stretch as far as the eye can see. 

But come November this landscape transforms, as the interspersed sandy desert and occasional vegetation is submerged in seasonal rainfall, attracting a massive numbers of zebra, springbok, and wildebeest, followed closely by their predators. This is all in a fairly remote corner of Botswana making for a game-viewing spectacle that is unhindered by hundreds of other safari vehicles.

Renowned for being one of the safest countries in Africa, Botswana is an ideal destination for travellers seeking peace of mind during their adventures. With low levels of crime and a welcoming atmosphere, you will be able to explore it with confidence. Most tourism is centred around Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta, which im happy to say experiences low levels of crime. However, as with any travel destination, it's essential to exercise caution and common sense. Keep your valuables secure, and avoid walking alone at night or in poorly lit areas. By staying aware of your surroundings and adhering to basic safety precautions, you can enjoy a worry-free experience in Botswana.

Visa Requirements

Visiting Botswana is easier than you might think, with straightforward visa requirements designed to facilitate travel for tourists. Citizens of EU countries, most Commonwealth countries, the USA, South Africa, Switzerland, Israel, and Norway do not need visas. You do however need a passport valid for at least six months beyond the initial date of travel. It is that easy.

Health and Vaccinations

Ensuring your health and well-being during your trip is paramount, but it doesn't have to be complicated. Botswana's health requirements are manageable, with routine vaccinations and a few additional precautions recommended for travellers coming from Yellow Fever endemic countries (Vaccinations supported by a valid certificate) Botswana’s requirements do make it fairly straightforward to visit with ease of mind.
